Heavy Equipment Operator: Dozer, Excavator, Tractor, Loader, Backhoe

Apprenticeship and Certification Act Unrestricted Trade


  • Use a variety of mobile machines and attachments such as backhoes, bulldozers, front-end loaders, graders, pavers and excavators
  • Dig trenches, haul, load or dump heavy materials, clear and level land, break rock or concrete, pave roads and parking lots
  • May operate unique equipment such as skidders or trench excavators in particular industries such as forestry or construction
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and general servicing of equipment
  • Work all seasons out of doors
  • Transport equipment to work site and load/unload equipment on transporter
  • May install and remove attachments to equipment as the work requires

Personal Qualities

  • Work well as part of a team and follow hand signals
  • Very safety conscious
  • Good eye, hand/foot coordination, fast reflexes
  • Good manual dexterity and visual acuity
  • Be willing to travel
  • Be patient and able to sit for long periods
  • Good communication, analytical and problem solving skills

  • Employment may be on a project-by project basis and involve travel

Educational/Training Requirements

  • The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
  • Completion of a 2,260 hour apprenticeship program
  • May require specific license(s) to drive transporter vehicle
