Description

  • Consult with the client regarding hairstyle preferences that are compatible with their physical features
  • Analyze hair and scalp condition and provide basic treatment or advice on beauty care treatments for scalp and hair
  • Shampoo and rinse hair
  • Cut, trim, taper and style hair
  • Use permanent wave solutions
  • Straighten or wave hair
  • Apply bleach, tints, dyes or rinses to colour, frost or streak, lighten and tone hair
  • Work with wigs, hairpieces and extensions
  • May train or supervise other hairstylists and hairstylist apprentices

Personal Qualities

  • You have the stamina to stand on your feet for long periods of time
  • You have tact and diplomacy and can handle very demanding clients
  • You like to talk with and listen to clients
  • You will be exposed to hair styling chemicals

Career Opportunities

  • Hairstylists are employed in hairstyling chains or private shops and may work in establishments in malls or major department stores
  • Many hairstylists own their own shops, while others rent chairs from another shop owner

Educational/Training Requirements

  • The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
  • Completion of a 3,020 hour apprenticeship for a regular apprentice and completion of a 2,000 hour apprenticeship for graduates of an approved private hairstyling school is required
