Apprenticeship and Certification Act, Unrestricted Trade


  • Perform preventative maintenance
  • Operate and maintain air conditioning and ventilation systems
  • Operate, troubleshoot and maintain air compressors, chillers and refrigeration machines, pumps and pumping stations
  • Operate, monitor and maintain water treatment systems
  • Inspect and verify fire suppression and sprinkler systems
  • Inspect, test and verify emergency power and lighting systems
  • Operate, monitor and maintain heating systems and low pressure boilers
  • Operate electrical systems
  • Maintain fume hoods
  • Operate and maintain control system instrumentation
  • Inspect and monitor plumbing
  • Monitor and analyze utility consumption

Personal Qualities

  • You may be required to work in cramped areas or on ladders
  • You are willing to work outside part of the time
  • You have the stamina to be on your feet for long periods of time
  • You like doing maintenance duties
  • You are extremely safety conscious

Career Opportunities

  • Journeypersons work for small, medium and large companies in the industrial, commercial, institutional or residential sectors or indirectly for those companies through contractors

Educational/Training Requirements

  • The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
  • Completion of a 7,280 hour apprenticeship program is required
  • If you have completed 8,000 hours of on the job experience but have not completed the Apprenticeship Program you may be eligible to challenge the Certificate of Qualification
