Elevating Device Mechanic

ACA, Unrestricted Certified Trade


  • Use a knowledge of various elevating devices including the electrical, hydraulic and mechanical systems involved
  • Install, inspect, maintain and repair elevating devices including elevators, chair lifts, moving platforms, escalators and hoists
  • May be required to service elevators ranging from those using primitive technology to those equipped with modern microprocessors
  • May be required to respond to emergency situations after hours

  • Able to work at heights and in confined spaces

  • Most elevating device mechanics are employed by companies that manufacture, install and service elevating devices

Educational/Training Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 12 is required, courses in English, Math and Technology may be helpful
  • Completion of a 7,280 hour apprenticeship program is required
  • Elevating devices mechanic is an unrestricted trade under the Apprenticeship and Certification Act, but certification in this trade is a compulsory requirement under the Technical Standards and Safety Act.
  • Apprentices/Sponsors must contact the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) to determine training and certification requirements
