Description

  • Create and implement a developmentally appropriate environment for children aged 0-12 years
  • Establish and maintain a safe and enriching learning environment
  • Treat all children equally and objectively with dignity and respect while recognizing diversity
  • Work closely with children's families and community agencies
  • Develop a variety of activities for children that include but are not limited to: appropriate social behaviours; physical activities; science; math; telling and reading stories; singing songs; providing opportunities for creative expression through crafts, dramatic play, and music
  • Work within a team of other Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and Assistants to ensure quality and safety of programs offered

Career Opportunities

  • Childcare centres, before and after school programs, Nursery Schools, Kindergartens, community centres, centres for children with exceptionalities, hospitals, educational system, cruise lines, resorts
  • Some ECEs have their own childcare businesses
  • As an ECE, you have a good base in child development that could lead into careers such as a children's author; teacher; developer of games, toys, and curriculum for children

Educational/Training Requirements

  • The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
  • Completion of a 5,280 hour apprenticeship program is required
  • In addition to receiving a Certificate of Apprenticeship, apprentices may be able to receive their E.C.E. Diploma. Apprentices should check with Seneca College regarding the additional courses they may require to receive a diploma.
