Description

  • Carve cooked meats, poultry, fish and game
  • Prepare complete meals, desserts, pastries, salads, salad dressings, hot and cold buffets, baked foods, soups and sauces, sandwiches, simple salads and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Prepares, assembles and cooks complete breakfasts, short order grill, simple desserts, weights and measures, hygiene, equipment handling, sanitation, safety and equipment
  • Have knowledge of stock controlling, receiving, issuing, menu planning and food costs and purchasing

Career Opportunities

  • Cooks are employed in restaurants, hotels, hospitals, other health care institutions, educational institutions, tourist resorts, summer camps and other establishments
  • Some cooks own their own restaurants
  • With additional training and experience, some cooks become chefs

Educational/Training Requirements

  • The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
  • Completion of a 5,280 hour apprenticeship program is required
  • If you have completed 6,000 hours of on the job experience/training and have not completed the apprenticeship program you may be eligible to challenge the Certificate of Qualification
